Week 36/ 2016

When you feel like the old guard. I was given the opportunity to speak to the incoming class of a youth program I graduated from 2 years ago. It was a bit of a stretch – coming into Manhattan on a Saturday early in the morning. We were a bit understaffed but everything went according to plan.

Speaking about my experience through this particular program to the incoming class made me feel good…and ancient at the same time. Even though black don’t crack, I’m still aware of my own mortality. Nontheless, seeing those young faces in the crowd with all the potential to be great. Despite their fears and insecurities as typical teenagers, asking me for advice! Can’t remember the last time that has happened before.

Gave respect where respect was due. Now is the time to lead by example. When I graduated, it said on my plaque: E. S., recognized for leadership performance. Check the photograph for this post. Let’s embrace the next generation, why don’t we?
